Ashwin’s 500 wickets in Test Cricket: On February 16, Ravichandran Ashwin solidified his status as one of the premier spinners of his era, joining the illustrious 500-wicket club during the ongoing third Test between India and England in Rajkot.
The off-spinner reached this remarkable milestone by dismissing England opener Zak Crawley in the final session of the day, providing a crucial breakthrough for India. With Rajat Patidar taking the catch at short fine leg, Ashwin became the second Indian bowler, after the legendary Anil Kumble, to achieve the feat.
Despite England’s strong start with their openers, Ashwin’s pivotal wicket was instrumental in turning the tide. In a post-day press conference, the Tamil Nadu ace reflected on his cricketing journey, emphasizing that reaching 500 Test wickets was a significant achievement for someone who initially considered himself an “accidental spinner.” Ashwin revealed that he originally aspired to be a batter, but circumstances led him to take up bowling, especially after performing well for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Ashwin acknowledged the doubts surrounding his ability to transition into a Test bowler, but over a decade later, he expressed satisfaction with his accomplishments.
India is set to face a significant setback in the ongoing third Test against England in Rajkot as their star spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, will be absent for the remaining three days.
The veteran player withdrew from the Test squad following the conclusion of the second day’s play, citing a family medical emergency, as confirmed by the BCCI on Friday (February 16).
Although the BCCI did not specify the nature of the emergency, Rajeev Shukla, the vice-president, disclosed that Ashwin’s absence is due to his mother’s illness. This development comes at a challenging time for
Team India, particularly considering England’s strong start in their first innings. Responding to India’s total of 445 runs in the first innings, England quickly reached 207/2 in just 35 overs.
The absence of Ravichandran Ashwin will be keenly felt, especially after he provided the crucial breakthrough by dismissing Zak Crawley in the second over of his spell. However, the veteran spinner will play no further part in the ongoing Test match.
