Australia Finalizes T20 World Cup Squad – Australia has locked in their final squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The 15-man playing squad remains the same as the preliminary list announced in May. However, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short have been added as traveling reserves to provide additional cover.

This means experienced players like Steve Smith and bowlers Jason Behrendorff and Tanveer Sangha miss out on selection for the four-week tournament in the West Indies and USA.

Mitchell Marsh Confirmed as Captain, Agar Recalled

Mitchell Marsh will lead the team, solidifying his promotion to full-time T20I captaincy. Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar makes a comeback to the squad despite not playing a T20I since the 2022 World Cup held in Australia. All-rounders Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Cameron Green join Glenn Maxwell to bolster the team’s versatility.

Australian chair of selectors George Bailey explained the selection of Fraser-McGurk and Short as reserves. Both players impressed the selectors and offer valuable cover in case of injuries during the tournament.

• Jake Fraser-McGurk: Adds depth to the batting lineup.

Bailey highlighted the importance of having reserves due to the tight schedule, making it difficult to bring in replacements quickly in case of injuries.

He believes both players possess exciting talent and could contribute if needed. Regardless of playing time, the experience will be valuable for their development at the international level.

Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign kicks off against Oman in Barbados on June 5th. Following that, they will face England, Namibia, and Scotland in Group B.
