Lanka Premier League Takes Strict Action Against Corruption: Dambulla Thunders Terminated
Dambulla Thunders Franchise Removed from LPL
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) announced a significant decision on Wednesday, May 22nd, terminating the Dambulla Thunders franchise from the league effective immediately. This action comes in response to the arrest of Dambulla Thunders’ owner, Tamim Rahman, by Sri Lankan authorities.
Reason for Termination: Alleged Corruption by Owner
Mr. Rahman, a British citizen of Bangladeshi origin and CEO of Imperial Sports Group (which acquired the Dambulla franchise in April 2024), was arrested at Colombo airport prior to boarding a flight. He faces allegations of involvement in match-fixing and betting, as per media reports. The arrest reportedly falls under the 2019 Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, which addresses corruption in sports.
LPL Prioritizes Integrity and Upholds High Standards
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), which oversees the Lanka Premier League, released a statement confirming the termination. The statement emphasizes the importance of maintaining the league’s integrity and smooth operation. LPL prioritizes upholding its values and reputation, ensuring all participants adhere to the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship.
The exact charges against Mr. Rahman remain unclear at this time. However, the LPL’s stance is clear: such allegations warrant swift action to protect the league’s integrity.
LPL to Proceed as Scheduled Despite Setback
The termination of the team will not impact the LPL’s fifth edition schedule. The league, which recently added Dambulla Thunders and Galle Marvels as new teams, remains committed to hosting the tournament as planned.
LPL officials have confirmed their willingness to run the team themselves if they cannot find a new owner before the tournament begins. This approach, while potentially causing financial strain, demonstrates the LPL’s commitment to a full-fledged competition.
Dambulla Thunders’ Player Roster and Upcoming Tournament
Prior to the termination, the Dambulla Thunders had already signed several prominent players for the upcoming LPL season, including Mustafizur Rahman, Dilshan Madushanka, and Nuwan Thushara.
The 2024 LPL will feature five teams, including Dambulla Thunders (if a new owner is found) and Galle Marvels alongside B-Love Kandy, Colombo Strikers, and Jaffna Kings. The tournament is scheduled to take place from July 1st to July 21st.
