Rashid Khan has decided not to participate in the PSL, but he is slated to take part in the IPL 2024

Afghanistan’s leg-spinner, Rashid Khan, has opted out of the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL) edition. Rashid, who was set to play for the Lahore Qalandars, his team for the past two seasons, cited his ongoing recovery from a back injury as the reason for his withdrawal from PSL 2024.

Having missed the recent IND vs AFG T20I series due to his recovery process, Rashid Khan underwent back surgery in November 2023 and has been diligently undergoing rehabilitation since then. Despite being retained by the Lahore Qalandars in the ‘silver’ draft in December, Rashid’s unavailability for PSL 2024 has prompted discussions about retaining him in future seasons.

Given Rashid Khan’s absence, Lahore Qalandars will be seeking a replacement during the supplementary and replacement draft, scheduled to be held virtually on Monday, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board. It’s worth noting that Rashid Khan also withdrew from the Big Bash League and SA20 earlier this month.

Following the determination that Rashid Khan was unfit to participate in the match against India, Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, emphasized the importance of ensuring Rashid Khan’s careful recovery from his back issue. Trott acknowledged Rashid’s significant influence on the team and stressed the need to wait until he is fully prepared, stating that the team is committed to ensuring his well-being. Additionally, Trott expressed confidence that Rashid will be the first player to return to the field once he is deemed ready to play.

Jonathan Trott emphasized the need for cautiousness regarding Rashid Khan’s back, stating, “We must ensure his back is treated with great care. Being such a pivotal player, we want to guarantee he is fully prepared, and we won’t hasten his return following the surgery. When he’s fit, he’ll be the first to take the field. With several upcoming appointments and check-ups to ensure everything is in order, there’s no specific timeframe. Although we hope for a prompt recovery, there’s no pressure or urgency.”

According to ESPNcricinfo, there is a possibility of Rashid Khan making a comeback during the T20I series between Afghanistan and Ireland in February. In the event that Rashid is unable to participate in the T20Is against Ireland, there are expectations that he will prioritize getting fit for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Recognized as one of the Afghanistan cricket team’s most skilled bowlers, Rashid has consistently troubled formidable batsmen with his spin and googlies. His commendable performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 saw him secure 11 wickets from 9 matches.

Known for his ability to control runs during the middle overs and deliver crucial breakthroughs, Rashid Khan is set to represent Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024. His efficient contributions are anticipated to play a pivotal role in the team’s quest for a second title victory.
