India’s batsman, Suryakumar Yadav, underwent surgery on his groin in Munich on January 17 to address a sports hernia, a condition that had deteriorated over time and necessitated medical intervention. This marks his second surgery in recent months, following the one for an ankle injury sustained during India’s tour of South Africa in December.
Expressing gratitude for the concerns and well-wishes regarding his health, Suryakumar assured everyone of his swift return in a post on X after the surgery. Having spent the past week in Bengaluru for ankle surgery rehab, he is expected to commence rehabilitation after the groin surgery in mid-February. Anticipated to make a comeback in IPL 2024, scheduled to kick off in the third week of March.
The batter has been a vital part of India’s batting unit in the shortest format. He is also the number-one-ranked batter in the T20I format. His role holds significance in India’s plans as the team aims to break the ICC title drought in the upcoming mega event scheduled for June.
Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav had been appointed as India’s T20I captain for the three-match series in South Africa, filling in for Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. Notably, he showcased his prowess with scores of 56 off 36 balls in the second T20I on December 12 and a brilliant 100 off 56 balls in the third T20I in Johannesburg on December 14.
Despite not being included in India’s ODI squad for the subsequent three-match series in South Africa, Suryakumar Yadav remained ineligible for selection in the recent T20I series at home against Afghanistan due to his injuries.
India emerged victorious against Afghanistan with a 3-0 scoreline in their last T20I series before the commencement of the 2024 T20 World Cup scheduled to start in June in the USA and the West Indies. The concluding match of the series in Bengaluru made history as the first T20 international ever to be determined after two Super Overs.
