Shamar Joseph-Contract Revised-West Indies Cricket Board

Shamar Joseph Contract In a recent development, the West Indies Cricket Board has decided to enhance the central contract of right-arm pacer Shamar Joseph, acknowledging his exceptional performance in the West Indies’ second Test victory against Australia at the renowned Gabba stadium in Brisbane earlier this month.

Shamar Joseph played a pivotal role in the series finale, contributing significantly to the West Indies’ historic Test match triumph in Australia after 27 years. The two-time World Champions were aiming for their first red-ball series win down under since 1992/93.

Despite losing the first Test by 10 wickets, the West Indies found inspiration in Rodney Hogg’s disparaging remarks about their team. Hogg’s comments fueled a desire within the West Indies camp to make history, and they responded fittingly in the Pink ball Test. Key performances from Kavem Hodge, Joshua Da Silva, Kevin Sinclair, and Alzarri Joseph helped the underdogs post 311 in the first innings.

The West Indies followed up with a solid bowling display, restricting Australia to 289. Shamar Joseph contributed with a single wicket, while Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph took 3 and 4 wickets, respectively. Despite a challenging second innings with the bat, the West Indies managed to post 211, setting a target.

In the defense of the target, Shamar Joseph, despite an injured toe from Mitchell Starc’s lethal yorker, led from the front. The 24-year-old, uncertain about taking the field after receiving treatment, went on to claim an impressive 7/68 in just his second Test match, dismissing Cameron Green, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood. Shamar Joseph ended the series with a total of 13 wickets, including a 5-wicket haul on his debut Test in Adelaide.

Recognizing his heroics at the Gabba and acknowledging his potential, Shamar Joseph has been awarded an international retainer contract by the West Indies Cricket Board. Prior to the series, the right-arm fast bowler held a franchise contract. This contract upgrade by CWI aims to secure his commitment to international cricket, distinguishing him from senior players like Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers, who often prioritize franchise T20 leagues over national duty.

CWI director Enoch Lewis considers this a significant moment for the nation, asserting that Shamar Joseph has rightfully earned his new contract. “As elated as we are, it is also a duty to elevate Shamar Joseph to a CWI international retainer contract. His extraordinary talent and unwavering dedication were pivotal in our team’s recent triumph at the Gabba, and such promise deserves its rightful recognition. Shamar has not just received a retained contract; he has earned it,” Lewis stated.
