The upcoming Champions Trophy in 2025, scheduled to be held entirely in Pakistan, has become a major talking point due to the uncertainty surrounding India’s participation. With Pakistan as the host nation, India’s presence would necessitate travel to the country.

The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) reportedly requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to either relocate the tournament or schedule India’s matches at a neutral venue. However, the ICC hasn’t confirmed any changes as of yet.

Recent media reports fueled speculation that India might skip the Champions Trophy 2025 tournament altogether. Addressing these rumors, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla clarified the situation. He stated that the BCCI hasn’t issued any official statement regarding India’s participation and the source of these reports remains unknown.

Historical Context: Political Tensions and Limited Encounters

This potential absence wouldn’t be unprecedented. Team India hasn’t toured Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup. Strained political relations between the two nations have significantly impacted bilateral cricket series, with the last one occurring in January 2013.

Since then, encounters between the arch-rivals have been limited to ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup.

Potential Consequences of India’s Withdrawal

If India decides not to participate in the Champions Trophy 2025, Sri Lanka, which finished ninth in the 2023 ODI World Cup standings, would likely take their place.

This scenario would be reminiscent of the 2023 Asia Cup held in Pakistan, where the Indian government reportedly denied permission for the team to travel. As a result, their matches were shifted to Sri Lanka.
